I have been pondering what kind of project I will attempt next and after some consideration I decided last week that I would venture into mobile development. At first the first thing to come to mind was iPhone development but considering the fact I don’t own a Mac I ruled that out. So looking into other avenues I found a few market places I liked (like the Blackberry app store and Nokia’s Ovi) but they require that you are a business (which isn’t too cheap where I live) and some require a “hefty” few just to judge your application (so I run the risk of having my app denied after paying for them to review it). After filtering through the possibilities I found that androids app store might be my best bet. So I looked on amazon and got the best rated android book. After reading through a few chapters I really wasn’t liking the way android’s coding flow, to me it just didn’t seem too natural.
I then decided to take a look at non-smart phones and remembered that java was pretty popular pre-iPhone. So after searching around I was under the impression that any phone having MIDP 2.0 could run a J2ME programmed MIDP 2.0 app. Well I was wrong but I didn’t realize that until after I had started reading tutorials on J2ME. What really got me hooked on J2ME was the “Game Programming Crash Course for J2ME” tutorial. Another factor playing into my attraction with J2ME is the fact I just got done with those programming lectures which used Java. What ever the case may be the simple fact is that I still feel like developing a J2ME game will be fun even after I have read some pretty bad things about the market. I think that I will be able to produce an overall better game if I enjoy the development environment which in turn will lead to more sales compared to me creating a game in an environment I dislike even though the market might be bigger.
With my recent taking to J2ME and my decision to create a mobile game I’m happy to announce my first blog series! It will be a log about EVERYTHING dealing with my process in making this J2ME game. Since I have personally tried to find such log’s and didn’t have much luck I think this development log will be a great resource to the indie game community and just good entertainment for developers alike. I will outline not only the good things but also the bad things. So this Monday I will start the log and if you would like to follow along I encourage you to subscribe to my blog to get updates!
