Just about everyone from the 10 year old kid down the street to your grand mother has joined some social networking site. With lots of new knockoffs being made every day it had to weave through what is good and what isn’t. It’s obvious that the big money makers are the ones that invent something ‘fresh’ and new but it seems like developers are also cashing in on niche markets.
Facebook is pretty much the king of all social networking sites. You know a site is big when developers can make a living off creating free apps for the site. Twitter is spreading like wild fire too which sort of brings me into today’s question which is: What will be the next big social networking trend? I think Twitter is so successful because they tapped into a market that is growing too which is the mobile market. Most people like to text and if you can micro-blog while texting… doesn’t that make it all the better? Personally I’m debating now whether to try and learn Django or Pygame. Both use the Python language and Django is pretty much like Ruby on Rails for those that do not know (it’s a web framework) and Pygame is a library to help with the creation of games. I want to spend the free time I have over the summer trying to get a prototype out of either a game or a social network. So I’m just wondering what you guys think the next movement in the social site domain will be? I’m thinking that mobile seems like a nice market to try and break into or maybe target a niche group of people with an idea that has already been used but make it better.
